Kwankao: What a Feeling! Bangkok Designer's New Collection09.06.2013
Kwankao’s Homage to Yesteryear Young Thai designer Kwankao Svetavimala has been watching movies recently. Well, one movie in particular has recaptured her imagination, and it has inspired her latest Spring/Summer 2013 collection. For Kwankao has always been inspired by the movie Flashdance, starring Jennifer Beals. It is a story that strikes a chord with her, and it has now inspired her to recreate the look synonymous with Jennifer Beals, the actress who played Alex Owens, the factory worker by day turned energetic dancer by night. “We are allowing you to dip into the bright explosion of candy colours that were around in the early 80’s” she says, “and I have used the title track from the movie for the title of my collection: What A Feeling!”

The film was a surprise success in 1983, becoming the third highest grossing film of the year, and if Kwankao’s story bears any resemblance to the movie then it is in how surprised many people were with her early design efforts. Kwankao, nicknamed Paeng, is the daughter of a very famous father, food critic Santi Svetavimala. the piano at five, and switched to the cello at 16. So people were highly sceptical when she suddenly announced she was entering the fashion industry. not going to hold her back, and she undertook a rigorous bout of self imposed study, attending centres of haute couture like the Milan Fashion Show, and seeking tips and guidance from some of the gurus of the industry.
Kwankao launched her fashion brand just two years ago, and she has already developed a very loyal following. Fans from as far afield as Australia and Europe now contact her office to place email orders. other areas, with the Hong Kong and Australian marketplaces of significant interest. presenter on TV.
